Tooth decay and gum disease are usually unnoticeable and painless in the early stages. By the time it becomes painful, it may already be too late to fix easily. In most cases, these problems arise without warning and with the worst timing – for example, before an important business meeting or during an overseas holiday.
At Parade Dental Ocean Grove, we thoroughly evaluate your general dental health at every check-up you have with us. This allows us to detect even the earliest signs of diseases, whether or not it’s your first time visiting us. So that early detection (and action) is possible, we generally recommend a dental visit every 6 to 12 months.
Curious to know what we look at in your dental check-up? You will be surprised to find out that it is not just about your teeth! We assess your:
- Medical history and medications – because your overall health can impact your dental health, and vice versa
- Dental concerns – so that we can adequately address your needs
- Daily home dental care – with a focus on how you clean your teeth and your diet, because at Parade Dental Ocean Grove we prioritise prevention
- Outside the mouth
- Muscles of the jaw – any tenderness or pain could be related to a larger issue with your chewing system
- Jaw joint – the main joint involved with chewing and jaw movement
- Inside the mouth
- Oral cancer check
- Cheeks, muscles, throat, tongue
- Teeth and gums
- Your bite (the way the teeth touch)
- Dental x-rays allow us to see between your teeth and underneath existing fillings for decay, which we would otherwise be unable to see with our eyes. It also allows us to evaluate the health of the jawbone that supports your teeth, and for signs of tooth infection.
- Photos may be taken to help you visualise the existing condition of your teeth; a picture is worth a thousand words, and a photo of your smile or teeth is no different. This is also a huge benefit to us when planning any proposed care.
We will then sit with you, review all the findings related to your oral health, and discuss any areas where there could be cause for concern.
