Unlike bones and nails, a tooth cannot regenerate itself when it breaks or becomes decayed. As the tooth loses its structural integrity, it is more prone to future breakages.
For weakened teeth that are at risk of breakages, dental crowns are like a helmet that help protect the remaining tooth – especially after it has been damaged by extensive decay, injury, or deterioration of a large filling.
Dental crowns can be made of tooth-coloured porcelain or metal (such as gold) and are generally stronger and more durable than a filling, and also protect the underlying tooth from fracturing over time.
Common situations where crowns are recommended:
- A tooth with extensive damage
- To protect a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment
- To improve the aesthetics of front teeth
- To act as a stable anchor for a removable denture
The procedure of dental crowns:
- The tooth is numbed
- The tooth is shaped to make space for the crown
- A mould is taken of your teeth. This is sent to our local crown laboratories and ceramists to achieve the best results for you.
- A temporary crown is placed on your shaped tooth
- At the next appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the custom-made crown is glued (cemented) on
Since prevention is best, at Parade Dental Ocean Grove we always prefer to detect problems when they are still a small issue, before it becomes a large issue that requires more complex management strategies such as dental crowns. This is only possible with regular dental check-ups.
