Back teeth often have naturally deep depressions and grooves (called pits and fissures), which trap plaque and food. They are often difficult to keep clean by brushing (particularly in young children) and this puts them at risk of developing tooth decay and cavities.
Protective sealants can be used to fill in these pits and fissures, creating a flatter surface that is easier to clean and stops plaque and food from getting trapped. Fissure sealants are a fantastic and cost-effective preventive measure which has spared many permanent (adult) molars from decay.
Fissure sealants are simple and painless to apply, meaning that we can do them even in very young children. The sealants are made from a special type of white or clear material. The tooth is first cleaned and dried, to ensure that the sealant will stick to the tooth properly. It is applied in a liquid form, and sets quickly under a special light. No drilling is required.
Fissure sealants will protect the teeth as long as they remain intact. Over time, sealants may chip, wear away, or dislodge. It is important that sealants are examined at regular check-ups, where they can easily be repaired or re-sealed if required.
